More Than a Camp: A Place Where Nature and People Connect
In 2023, I first heard about Valley Camp in Chile and thought, "I want to go!" Two years later, in July, that dream came true in Peru, at the 2025 Mountain School Camp. The camp's goal is to promote self-care, caring for others, and respect for the environment by learning basic mountaineering techniques, practices such as "Leave No Trace" principles, flora and fauna identification, first aid training, rock climbing, hiking, and more.
En 2023 escuché por primera vez de Valley Camp en Chile y pensé: “¡Quiero ir!”. Dos años después, en julio, ese sueño se cumplió en Perú, en el Campamento Escuela de Montaña 2025, que tiene como objetivo fomentar el autocuidado, el cuidado de los demás y el respeto al medio ambiente mediante el aprendizaje de técnicas básicas de montañismo, prácticas como: principios de "No Dejar Rastro", identificación de flora y fauna, primeros auxilios, escalada en roca, senderismo, entre otros.
I'm Magdalena, a psychologist dedicated to socio-environmental education. While guiding at Explora in Patagonia National Park, I learned about Valley Camp, and getting there was a gift: teenagers from different communities in Peru and Bolivia, guides from Venezuela, Colombia, and the United States, and me from Chile, all united by the same thing: nature.

Guiando en el Parque Nacional Patagonia conocí de Valley Camp, y llegar allá fue un regalo: adolescentes de distintas comunidades de Perú y Bolivia, guías de Venezuela, Colombia, Estados Unidos y yo desde Chile, todos unidos por lo mismo: la naturaleza.
Although I arrived nervously, I found a welcoming team and young people curious to share their cultures. Between hikes around Ausangate Mountain, workshops, campfires, and nights of rain and snow, I understood that what warms us is not the tent, but that human warmth. I also discovered that, in a world of painful news, there are still places where profoundly beautiful things happen: at Valley Camp.
Aunque llegué con nervios, me encontré con un equipo acogedor y jóvenes curiosos por compartir sus culturas. Entre caminatas en la Montaña de Ausangate, talleres, fogatas y noches de lluvia y nieve, entendí que lo que abriga no es la carpa, sino ese calor humano. Descubrí también que, en un mundo de noticias dolorosas, aún existen rincones donde ocurren cosas profundamente hermosas: En Valley Camp.
If you ever have the chance to experience something like this, do it! It's not just about getting to know places; it's about meeting people, celebrating diversity, and letting nature remind us of what truly matters. I would come back again and again!
Por eso, si alguna vez tienes la oportunidad de vivir algo así, ¡hazlo! No es solo conocer lugares, es encontrarte con personas, celebrar la diversidad y dejar que la naturaleza nos recuerde lo que realmente importa. ¡Yo volvería una y mil veces más!
